Plexitis, also known as plexopathy, is a medical term used to describe an inflammatory condition of the plexus, a group of nerves along the spine that give rise to the peripheral nervous system, connected to the extremities. These nerves provide sensation and control of movement to the limbs and organs of the body.
Plexitis can have different forms and symptoms depending on the cause and location of the inflammation. Brachial plexitis affects the shoulder and arm, while lumbosacral plexitis affects the pelvis, sacrum and lower extremities. There are many causes of plexitis, including trauma, infection, inflammation or nerve compression. The condition can be temporary or chronic, depending on how it is managed and treated.
Symptoms can be very painful and restricting movement, including sharp, burning and radiating pain in the affected area, accompanied by reduced mobility of the limb. Stiffness and numbness, loss of sensation, muscle weakness, limited motor activity and weakened reflexes are usually felt.
A neurologist is the specialist who can prescribe and monitor the treatment of plexitis. If not treated as soon as possible, plexitis usually becomes chronic. Any cold or stress can provoke its next manifestation.
Often, in the first stage of the disease, drug treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs is prescribed to relieve acute pain. The key role in the treatment of plexitis, however, is physical therapy. It can include procedures with ultrasound, electric pulses and laser, as well as exercises, massages, acupuncture.
The most successful are the treatment courses in which physiotherapy and kinesitherapy are combined with procedures in a mineral pool with suitable mineral water.
